In a historic moment for India and the global scientific community, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a momentous milestone on August 23, 2023. The Lander Module (LM) of ISRO’s third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, successfully touched down on the lunar surface, marking India’s triumphant entry into the elite club of lunar explorers. Notably, this achievement also earned India the distinction of being the first country to make a soft landing near the Moon’s south pole.

Launched with great enthusiasm on July 14, Chandrayaan-3’s Lander Module completed its arduous journey to the Moon, culminating in a flawless landing at precisely 6.03 p.m. Indian Standard Time. The Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru erupted in jubilant celebrations as the Lander safely reached its lunar destination.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to the team of dedicated scientists at ISRO. He stated, “India’s successful moon mission is not India’s alone…Our approach of one earth, one family, one future is resonating across the globe…Moon mission is based on the same human-centric approach. Following its successful landing, the Lander Module seamlessly deployed the Rover, which is now poised to carry out vital in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during its mission duration. Both the Lander and the Rover, with a mission lifespan of one Lunar day (equivalent to 14 Earth days), are equipped with an array of scientific payloads to facilitate groundbreaking experiments on the lunar surface.

India’s triumphant landing on the Moon’s south pole signifies a remarkable achievement in the realm of space exploration. The country is now only the fourth in the world, after the erstwhile USSR, the United States, and China, to achieve the remarkable feat of a soft lunar landing.
